The Linguistic Services Department is the largest division of the Translation Centre, and is dedicated to delivering high-quality linguistic services across multiple languages. Our team of skilled language professionals make up more than half of the Translation Centre’s staff.

The Linguistic Services Department comprises four language sections:

• Baltic, Finno-Ugric and Mediterranean 
• Germanic and Irish
• Romance
• Slavonic

Each language section contains between five and seven language groups, one for each official EU language. The teams differ in size according to the translation workload for that target language.

Our language professionals undertake a wide range of activities, including translation, post-editing of machine translation, subtitling, transcription and editing. They also provide language consultancy, maintain translation memories, compile glossaries and contribute to the IATE interinstitutional termbase.

Staff benefit from ongoing training throughout their career at the Centre, ensuring they remain up to date with the latest technology and practices. They also take part in client‑specific activities and may have the opportunity to learn, or consolidate, new languages.

The Translation Centre’s professional linguists guarantee the quality of the linguistic services that are delivered to our partners, both those carried out in-house and those outsourced to specialised external language service providers.
