The Translation Centre at the Multilingualism EU Summer School

The Translation Centre was proud to take part in this year’s Multilingualism EU Summer School 2025, a flagship training programme for promising master’s students in translation, interpreting and law from universities across the EU. Hosted in Luxembourg at the heart of the EU institutions and bodies between 7 and 11 July 2025, the Summer School offers future professionals in language and law a unique window into the world of EU multilingualism.

Spotlight on terminology and IATE

The Summer School provided the Translation Centre with the opportunity to deliver a practical, hands-on workshop on terminology and IATE – the EU’s terminology management system and one of the largest termbases in the world, containing nearly 7 million terms. Led by one of our in-house IATE expert, this session gave students an inside look into how multilingual terminology supports effective communication across EU institutions. 

The workshop highlighted how terminology work and data management are carried out at the Translation Centre and boosted by IATE. Participants were able to experiment with some of IATE’s internal features (e.g. entry creation, Terminology Projects Module, AI-based features), while also discovering the tool’s recent developments. Through live demonstrations, real-life examples and interactive group discussions, students gained valuable insights into the vital role of terminology in EU translation and multilingual services.

About the Multilingualism EU Summer School

This week-long, in-person programme brings together around 33 master’s students selected from universities in the European Masters in Translation (EMT) and European Masters in Conference Interpreting (EMCI) networks, as well as law students enrolled in dual degree programmes. The initiative is designed not only to provide high-quality training by skilled EU professionals, but also to showcase Luxembourg as an attractive place to live and work and enable the students to network and develop insights into their future careers.

Throughout the week, students explored the day-to-day work of language professionals in EU institutions, engaged in workshops and visited key institutions (including the European Parliament, European Commission, European Investment Bank and the Luxembourgish Ministry of Foreign Affairs). They were also able to participate in cultural and networking events throughout the day and evening. The Summer School aims to attract new talent to the EU’s translation and interpretation services in Luxembourg and to foster a deeper appreciation of multilingualism in Europe.
